Kathy Bates receives an Emmy nomination. But that's not the only honor.

On Tuesday, July 15, the nominees for the prestigious Emmy Awards were announced. Among the honorees was Kathy Bates, who stars in the CBS reboot of "Matlock." The 77-year-old star became the oldest actress to be nominated for an Emmy for Leading Actress in a Drama Series.
The oldest actress to be nominated for Leading Actress in a Drama Series was Angela Lansbury , as Variety reports. When she received the nomination in 1996 for her role in "Murder, She Wrote," she was 70. Kathy Bates significantly raised the bar for oldest actress nominated by seven years.
In " Matlock, " Bates plays Madeline "Matty" Matlock, a smart and resilient lawyer who returns to the legal world decades after a mysterious and tragic retirement. According to her official bio, she was left to raise her grandson, whose mother died in a car accident.
The situation wasn't helped by Matlock's debts from her late, gambling-addicted husband. Now she's employed at a prestigious law firm, and her boss is Olympia, who is decades her junior.
This isn't Bates' first nomination in this category. In 2011 and 2012, she was recognized for her role in the series "Harry's Law." At 64, she was the fifth-oldest nominee in this prestigious category. She did not win the award. However, she has already won two Emmys, for a guest appearance on "Two and a Half Men" and a supporting role in "American Horror Story: Coven."
The Apple TV+ series "The Separation" received the most Emmy nominations, with 27. Another production from the platform, the comedy "The Studio," also had reasons to celebrate, with 23 nominations. However, the most nominations overall (142) went to HBO Max productions, including "Penguin," "The White Lotus," "The Last of Us," and "Hacks." The awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 14.
