The town of Murcia with palaces, a Baroque sanctuary and remains of a Roman-Visigothic city

Traveling back in time is possible if we visit the right place. This is amply demonstrated by the beautiful town of Cehegín , located in the Region of Murcia . This picturesque village draws attention from a distance thanks to its hilltop location, but if we go closer and delve into its labyrinth of streets, we will discover the historical traces of ancient civilizations, centuries-old buildings , and a peaceful atmosphere that makes the town the perfect destination for a rural getaway .
A town brimming with historyHuman presence in the lands now occupied by Cehegín dates back to the Neolithic period , as evidenced by the remains found. Later, from the 2nd century BC, the area was dominated by the Romans, who gave way to the Visigoths, who made the town an episcopal seat. In fact, the site of the Roman-Visigothic city of Begastri can now be visited.

With the arrival of the Arabs , the present-day town was founded, which was named Sinnayyiyín. In 1243, the town passed into Christian hands with the Reconquista, and from 1311 onwards, it came under the control of the Order of Santiago . It continued to evolve until it became the picturesque town it is today.
What to see in CehegínIts long history is reflected in every corner, starting with its old town , one of the most beautiful in Murcia. On the other hand, the Sanctuary of the Virgin of Wonders , declared a National Monument and built between the 16th and 18th centuries, is one of the few preserved examples of Murcian Baroque. Another essential stop is the Cehegín Archaeological Museum , divided into three historic buildings in the Plaza del Castillo: the Town Hall, the Fajardo Palace, and the annex building on Calle Mayor.
