Airbnb on How Indian Travelers Are Staying Local and Spending More

India was one of Airbnb’s fastest growing markets in 2024, according to a new research by Oxford Economics.
In 2024, domestic travelers accounted for around 91% of Airbnb’s guests in India, up from 79% in 2019, the report, which was commissioned by Airbnb, noted.
“This was fuelled by a surge in domestic travel, corresponding to stronger demand from younger Indian Airbnb guests," the report noted. Apart from this, the company recorded the biggest inbound demand among travelers from the U.S., UK, Canada, and Australia to India.
“This report shows how domestic travel continues to be the primary engine of tourism in India fueling micro entrepreneurship, boosting allied sectors, and supporting small businesses across both emerging and lesser-known destinations,” said Amanpreet Bajaj, country head for Airbnb India and Southeast Asia. “This momentum signals a broader shift toward more inclusive, locally driven tourism.”
