Yellowstone 1883 and 1923 Dutton family connection explained from James to John

Yellowstone 1923 has emerged as another triumph for Paramount, following the success of its first prequel, 1883. The 1923 series introduces Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton.

James Dutton, portrayed by Tim McGraw, was the family patriarch in 1883 who established the Dutton ranch in Montana. He settled there at his daughter Elsa's request, who tragically died after being shot with an arrow.

The inaugural episode of 1923 revealed that James was Jacob Dutton's brother, who came to the family's rescue upon hearing of James' demise. Discovering that James' wife Margaret had also died, Jacob took their children under his wing, raising them as if they were his own.

Margaret Dutton, played by Faith Hill, was the matriarch in 1883, deeply caring for her children and their safety. Despite being feisty and a fearless fighter, she constantly worried about her family's future, reports the Express.

After her husband's death, she too died, leaving behind her two sons. She was Jacob Dutton's sister-in-law, who stepped in to continue James' legacy.

John Dutton Sr features in 1883 as a young boy, played by Audie Rick, and is Elsa Dutton's younger brother. He was one of the two surviving children, as Elsa succumbed to her injuries at the end of the first prequel.

The character is portrayed by James Badge Dale in the 1923 prequel, where he plays the role of Jacob Dutton's nephew. He was a devoted worker on the ranch who tragically lost his life when the family found themselves in a shootout with rival ranchers.

Elsa Dutton, voiced by Isabel May, serves as the narrator in both 1883 and 1923, despite her character being killed off at the end of the first prequel. She defied her family's expectations by immersing herself in ranch life.

Trading her dress for trousers and chaps, she embraced the male-dominated profession. Elsa is Jacob Dutton's niece, although he never got to meet her while she was alive.

Fans were delighted to learn that the actress has returned to narrate the next instalment of her family's saga. Regrettably, there will be no new episodes of 1883 as 1923 serves as the sequel.
