Chief of War Release Schedule: When Do New Episodes Come Out?
chief of war

This fall, Jason Momoa is the Chief of War. The Dune: Part Two star leads a predominantly Polynesian cast in the new Apple TV+ series about Hawaii’s unification, with directing duties from Justin Chon (Pachinko). The first two episodes of the nine-episode limited miniseries dropped on August 1, starring Momoa as the fierce Hawaiian warrior chief Kaʻiana as he wrestles sharks and takes on the whole island himself.

A bit of a passion project for the native Hawaiian, Chief of War is a violent and historical account of the island nation of Hawaii at the end of the 18th century. Here’s a brief history lesson. In the late 1700s, the four major islands—Hawaii, Maui, Oahu, and Kauai—were all at war. Fearing the threat of Western colonization, supreme ruler (aliʻi nui) Kamehameha, sought to conquer and unify the islands' forces. We won’t spoil real-life history here, but Momoa’s chief Ka’iana serves under Kamehameha leading up to one of the most important battles in Hawaii’s history. Chief of War centers fully on Ka’iana’s journey, with Kamehameha's legacy stepping largely to the side. According to Momoa, the series aims to finally tell the story from an Indigenous point of view.

“You have to understand. This is not just us working our day job,” Momoa told The Wrap. “This is our heritage. I’m not playing a fictitious character or a superhero. These are my ancestors. If I f**k any of this up, we’re not coming home.”
