There are three artists competing to represent Portugal in Venice. Who are they?

According to a statement published on the DGArtes website, the selection of the winning project will take place until November 10, with an amount available for participation in Venice of 425 thousand euros.
Alexandre Estrela proposes 'RedSkyFalls' (the title of a 2019 work by the artist), while Pedro Barateiro's project is called 'Truvadores' and Mikhail Karikis' is called 'Universo de Soluções' (the title of a project designed for the UNESCO Creative Cities network in Braga, according to the artist's website).
"The selected proposals respond to the general theme of the Venice Biennale, 'In Minor Keys', launched by general curator Koyo Kouoh, not so much as a literal framework, but rather for their ability to resonate and expand the exhibition's theme," added DGArtes.
The working group that selected the three projects will be the same one that will choose the winner and is made up of Andreia Magalhães, Joaquim Moreno, José Bragança de Miranda and Nuno Faria.
The call for expressions of interest for Venice opened at the end of July and received proposals until August 28.
A year ago, the Ministry of Culture, then led by Dalila Rodrigues, announced that the submission of applications to represent Portugal at the Venice Biennale would no longer be by invitation and would become open to all interested parties from 2025 onwards.
In addition to changing the representation selection model, "in order to guarantee broad participation", the Ministry also announced, at the time, in a statement, a new location for the Portuguese Pavilion, which left the Palazzo Franchetti, on the Grand Canal in Venice, due to the end of the lease, and would return to the Fondaco Marcello, next to the Grand Canal.
The upcoming Venice Art Biennale - which will take place under the theme 'In Minor Keys', designed by curator Koyo Kouoh, who passed away in May this year - will present a transformative vision of art in a "poetic whisper" of resistance, introspection and joy in times of global exhaustion, according to the event's organizers in Italy.
The exhibition will run from May 9 to November 22, 2026, with a pre-opening on May 7 and 8, in the Gardens, the Arsenal and other locations in central Venice.
