Signs have appeared over the Baltic Sea, warning of serious danger.

Members of the WOPR (Volunteer Water Rescue Service) in Międzyzdroje this week installed warning signs on the beach in the Polish resort. They're talking about the so- called reverse current, a rip current that can sweep an adult far out to sea in moments. Unfortunately, many Baltic Sea tourists overlook this danger, and this can end in tragedy. "Before entering the sea, pay attention to the signs and follow the rules," the lifeguards recommend.
"Black water spot" on the beach in MiędzyzdrojeWhile strolling along the beach in Międzyzdroje, you might come across a "black water spot" sign. The Water Rescue Service (WOPR) designates such areas as particularly dangerous, as drownings have occurred nearby in the past. Dangerous backwaters can occur here, which can prove fatal even to very experienced and strong swimmers. This doesn't mean swimming is prohibited (although refraining from entering the water is recommended), but it is necessary to exercise extreme caution.
Thanks to the cooperation between the Volunteer Water Rescue Service (WOPR) and the municipality, new signs appeared in Międzyzdroje on Tuesday. They include information on the reverse current pattern, essential emergency numbers, and instructions on how to use a life preserver and what to do in an emergency.
What to do in case of reverse current? The speed of a countercurrent can reach up to 2.5 meters per second. The first and most important rule to follow when swept away is to remain calm. Fighting the current and struggling will only worsen the situation. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current, then head towards shore. In the meantime, call for help.
The location of a current isn't always easy to identify. It's worth paying attention to waves, which may be less visible or absent at that point.
