  • Sow winter lettuce and snow peas outdoors if your vegetable garden is in a sunny, sheltered spot. You can also sow other hardy vegetables outdoors, such as spinach (this fast-growing vegetable is ready to harvest in 30-45 days). Cover with cloches or fleece.
  • Plant rhubarb in nutrient-rich soil in a light, open spot. Plant the crowns so that the buds are at ground level. Press the soil down and water. Let the plants grow well for two years before you harvest the first stalks.

  • Seize the last opportunity to winter prune apple and other fruit trees at the end of February. Once growth starts again, you are too late. Then there is a good chance that you will remove flower buds or young fruits.

Empty your winter pots and fill them with new, cheerful plants.
  • If you need to repair support structures for vines , do so while the plants are still dormant. Carefully detach the vines, make your repairs, and reattach them properly.
