Mediterranean Encounters kicks off in Naples: focus on historian Fernand Braudel

The twentieth edition of "Mediterranean Encounters" opens on Monday, September 29th (at 3:30 PM) at the Institut Francais in Naples on Via Crispi. This series of debates on historical and social topics is organized by Luigi Mascilli Migliorini, a former professor at the Università Orientale and the author of "Napoleon" and "Metternich." This year's focus is on Fernand Braudel, the inventor of Mediterranean history (so relevant today), although other issues, such as climate change, still make the Annales historian interesting today. Braudel divides time into "long duration" (longue durée): slow, almost immobile processes linked to geography, the environment, and deep-seated economic structures; and "conjunctural time": medium-long rhythms, such as those of the economy, civilizations, and political systems.
