In pictures. What if you spent the summer under the palm trees at home?

  • Fan-shaped hardy trees Omnipresent on postcards of the tropics, palm trees are also familiar sights in greenhouses and winter gardens. Their leaves can resemble long feathers or fans. Among the hardiest, many have fan-shaped leaves, such as the Chinese fan palm (

  • How frost-resistant are fan palms? The hardiest fan palms can be planted in gardens even with cold winters. The hemp palm (Trachycarpus fortunei) tolerates temperatures down to -15°C. Chamaerops humilis, a Mediterranean dwarf palm, can withstand temperatures down to -12°C and has a bushy habit, suitable for small spaces and windy areas. Rhapidophyllum hystrix, also known as the needle palm, can withstand temperatures down to -20°C and retains dark, compact foliage. Sabal minor can withstand temperatures down to -18°C, grows slowly, and remains small, making it ideal for flowerbeds. Photo Depositphotos
  • Pinnate Palms: Fragile EleganceThe long, large feather-shaped palms found on the Canary Island palm (Phoenix canariensis) are the most graceful, but also the most fragile. Phoenix canariensis can withstand temperatures down to -8°C, has a massive trunk and dark green foliage, ideal for large gardens. Butia capitata is resistant to -10°C, has arched blue-green foliage and can bear fruit in temperate climates. Syagrus romanzoffiana, more fragile, can tolerate temperatures down to -7°C, has an elegant shape and slender palms. Photo Depositphotos
  • How to plant them in pots? With regular care, it's possible to grow your palm tree in a pot. It will then become the most beautiful ornament by your pool or balcony. Of course, they look their best in large containers. Orangery wooden crates are ideal for their proper growth. In any case, you'll need to consider the container's mobility: many palm trees need sheltered wintering. Several palm trees will easily lend themselves to this exercise: Chamaedorea elegans, Licuala grandis, or Phoenix roebelenii. Photo Depositphotos
  • Planting in the garden: Planting in the ground offers advantages. Your palm tree will grow taller and faster. It will withstand winters more easily and requires less maintenance than in a pot. When it comes to its location, avoid areas that are too humid. Plant it against a south-facing wall to promote its growth and frost resistance. The Afghan palm (Nannorrhops ritchiana) is one of the few palm trees that can grow anywhere and withstand temperatures down to -18 degrees. It is therefore not surprising to see it establishing itself permanently on our seaside, just like the Chinese palm. Photo Daderot (CC)

Few plants evoke vacations and warmer climates as much as palm trees. The most fragile ones find their place in our verandas or winter gardens, while others can stay in the garden all year round. Here's how to make room for them in your home.
