Storm Alice continues to bring rain to eastern Spain but weather alerts downgraded, Spanish opposition proposes register of doctors who want to perform abortions and more news on Tuesday October 14th.

Spanish opposition proposes register of doctors who want to perform abortions

The leader of Spain's opposition Popular Party (PP) and possible next Prime Minister, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has proposed the creation of a register of doctors who want to perform abortions and in doing so to repeal the so-called 'objectors register'.

The obligation to create a database of abortion objectors is part of Spain's Abortion Law but last week the president of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, sparked a row with the national government after refusing to implement it in her region.

The centre-right PP has found itself in political hot water over the issue of abortion in recent weeks after Madrid's city council passed a far-right Vox pushed reform to tell women considering an abortion about the risks of a scientifically unproven "post-abortion syndrome".

In response the ruling Socialists (PSOE) pledged to enshrine the right to abortion in the Spanish constitution.

Valencia flood judge accuses regional leader Mazón of creating 'fictions'

The judge investigating a possible criminal case for the DANA flood management in Valencia last year has described comments by the regional President Carlos Mazón as "fiction" and "self-fiction."

Reports in La Sexta state that the magistrate is pressing the Generalitat boss, inviting him to testify before the court to support comments made to the media in recent months and see if he wants them to be taken into account in the investigation.

The judicial probe comes partly in response to interviews given by Mazón in which he attributed the slow response on October 29th to an alleged lack of information from national bodies such as Spain's state meteorological agency (Aemet) and the Júcar Hydrographic Confederation (CHJ).

Virtually all Sabadell customers reject BBVA takeover bid

A total of 97.2 percent of Banco Sabadell's shareholders have rejected BBVA's takeover bid, and those who accepted, 2.8 percent, represent only 1.1 percent of the group's capital, the Catalan bank reported on Tuesday.

Banco Sabadell detailed in a newsletter sent to the National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) that minority shareholders who are customers of the bank represent 30.8 percent of the group's capital.

Tensions have been mounting as Spanish banking giant BBVA's hostile takeover bid for smaller national rival Sabadell gets closer and closer.

The proposed deal aims to create a European banking powerhouse capable of competing with industry heavyweights such as Santander, BNP Paribas and HSBC.

Storm Alice continues to bring rain to eastern Spain but less intensely

Storm Alice is reducing its intensity and beginning to move away from the Mediterranean coast after several days of very heavy rainfall and dramatic flooding in Valencia, Alicante, the Balearics, Murcia and Catalonia.

Tarragona and Alicante, which remained on red alert on Monday, have been downgraded to orange alert on Tuesday, meaning that there is still the risk of significant rain.

The Valencian Community, southern Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands will experience also experience another day of considerable rainfall, which could be accompanied by hail in some areas.

Catalan authorities have decided to keep schools closed for another day classes and impose mobility restrictions for Tuesday in four regions south of Tarragona (Montsià, Baix Ebre, Ribera d'Ebre, and Terra Alta) due to the rain, and will approve the first financial aid for people affected in those areas.
