Netflix adds 'gritty' six-part crime thriller viewers will want to binge in one go

The Gathering Channel 4 trailer
Netflix has just added a 'gritty' six part crime thriller that fans say viewers will want to binge watch in one sitting.
Originally broadcast on Channel 4 last year, The Gathering is now available on the major streaming platform. All episodes are available to watch for users to view from today (August 25), which should take care of any Bank Holiday plans.
The show caused a stir when it was first aired, not least for its twist and turns as well as convincing performances from such a young cast. Billed as a teen drama, however it was enjoyed by older audience members as well.
According to the synopsis a violent attack on a teenager at an illegal beach rave sends shockwaves of suspicion through a Merseyside community. As secrets and lies of both the youngsters and their parents are laid bare, the truth behind the attack starts to emerge.

While the show was created and written by author Helen Wash, making it her debut title for television, the show was made by the production company behind some of the biggest crime dramas in the UK. It was made by World Productions, who were also behind Line of Duty and Karen Pirie, with the series also sharing those show's directors.
It might not have performed well enough on its original broadcaster to convince Channel 4 to renew it for a second season, but now The Gathering is landing on Netflix, it is expected to reach a brand new wider audience. It would not be a surprise if it lands a spot on the platform's top 10 most watched.
Filmed and set around Merseyside, the production took advantage of locations in Liverpool and the Wirral including the Empire Theatre and Red Rocks beach area in Hoylake. Many critics praised this use of setting.
One reviewer claimed: "It’s a watchable, gritty drama. The details are superb. Liverpool makes for a compelling back-drop, showing the rough and the smooth. The casting is tight so you believe these people and understand their motives."
Many fans also sang its praises, including one who posted online saying: "A brilliant six episode watch that had me gripped from start to finish. The localised cast give a level of authenticity and Eva Morgan leads the show very well. You’ll be guessing everyone’s true intentions in this classic whodunit but with a twist. This certainly carried a level of nostalgia also for those of us that grew up watching shows like Skins."

Another added: "Absolutely demonstrated crime drama at its very best . What an interesting, entertaining, engaging and intriguing plot , first rate acting especially from the actress playing Kelly."
While someone else commented: "Just watched three in a row and could have watched the whole series. So good, it's like a cinematic experience. Outstanding writing, perfect casting all round, and exceptionally good and true acting, it feels like family."
They continued: "The entangled storylines, presented in a kaleidoscope so compelling, it makes you question your own integrity. You will need to know how this all ends. Gritty and brilliant. An absolute must watch."
The Gathering is streaming on Channel 4 and Netflix.
