How to Wear the Ballet Sneakers Trend Like Charli XCX, BLACKPINK's Rosé & More

Of the many sneaker trends rising in popularity this season, ballet sneakers might just be one of the most daunting (save for the controversial throwback sneaker wedges). A hybrid between a ballet flat and a traditional sneaker, these broquettecore shoes combine seemingly juxtaposed aesthetics, so it’s understandable that it feels intimidating to style ballet sneakers.
But, it seems this trend isn’t going anywhere quite yet. While ballet sneakers were already seeing virality on social media, celebrity endorsements took them to the next level. BLACKPINK’s Rosé starred in Puma’s campaign for the Speedcat Ballet, which are almost sold out on their site. Leaning more on the ballet side, Charli XCX was spotted wearing a dainty satin pink pair, VIVAIA’s Yanka Sneakerina, at Coachella with a frilly skirt and graphic tee outfit. Win Metawin similarly sported a pair while off-duty in Milan for Fashion Week.
Those who aren’t ready to commit to the bit can take a page from Tate McRae’s book and go for a subtle interpretation with a more traditional sneaker that has a more slender silhouette. And those we want to face the trend head-on can check out our Teen Vogue editors’ tips for styling ballet sneakers.
JW Pei Caitlin Lace-up Ballerina Sneakers
Since ballet sneakers are quite a statement piece themselves, there’s no need to pull out all the stops for your outfit. Associate Editor Aiyana Ishmael balanced the pop of hot pink in the JW Pei Caitlin Lace-up Ballerina Sneakers with a structured blouse, complete with a bow to match the coquette shoes. Then she kept it simple with a pair of jeans, evening the look out and making it perfect for a casual summer day.
Simone Rocha Classic Criss Cross Tracker Ballerina Flats
Truly embracing the broquette trend, Executive Director of Video Mi-Anne Chan went for a pair of bermuda shorts, an oversized fringe-detailed button up, and a trucker hat. Giving it a coquette edge, she braided her pastel hair into two pigtails and reached for her Simone Rocha Classic Criss Cross Tracker Ballerina Flats.

If you’re more into the balletcore side of the trend, lean into that instead. Think light pink and neutral hues, satin and chiffon, bows and ribbons, and coquette accessories. For a more toned down look that works for everyday wear, I opted for a baby pink polo to match my VIVAIA Yanka Sneakerina and paired it with an A-line skirt.
