Türkiye Textile Biennial at the Intersection of Water and Art

"93 BILLION CUBIC METERS OF WATER ARE USED EVERY YEAR IN THE TEXTILE SECTOR"
Biennial curator Nihat Özdal emphasized the relationship between textiles and water, saying, "93 billion cubic meters of water are used in the textile sector every year in the world. 10 thousand cubic meters of water are used for a pair of jeans, and 2,500 cubic meters of water are used for a cotton t-shirt. 20% of global water pollution is caused by textiles, and approximately 100 billion new textile products are introduced to the market every year."
Özge Kahraman, one of the artists participating in the biennial, researches the physical, historical and aesthetic structure of caves as a member of the Anatolian Speleology Group Association (ASPEG).
"IT IS AN INCREDIBLE EXPERIENCE TO BRING MY ART TO THE AUDIENCE IN THE PLACE WHERE I FEEL MOST BELONGING"
The artist, who exhibited his works in a cave for the first time, said, "Thanks to the Biennial, my dream came true and my works met with the audience in the Yalan Dünya Cave. As someone who has explored caves until now, I was always looking from the outside, but this time the cave itself was also a part of the exhibition. It is difficult to describe the atmosphere, it was an unforgettable experience to bring my art together with the audience in the place where I felt most comfortable."
Among the artists whose works are exhibited at the biennial are American Thomas Jackson and Swedish Diana Orving. Jackson said, "What I love to do is take man-made materials and place them in natural landscapes and have them mimic nature," while Orving said, "The themes I explore are based on transformation, movement and the flow of nature."
The 2nd Turkish Textile Biennial will continue to welcome its visitors until April 13th.
