A woman making history: Afsaneh Hesamifard! The Iranian mountaineer has become an inspiration for female climbers not only in her own country but worldwide by climbing every peak in the world over 8,000 meters. 🌍💪
Afsaneh Hesamifard (Persian: افسانه حسامیفرد) was born on December 26, 1976, in Sabzevar, Iran . A graduate of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences , Hesamifard is known as both a mountain medicine instructor and a passionate mountain climber. Over the years, her achievements in high-altitude mountaineering have made her a pioneering figure for female athletes in Iran.
Only 14 mountains in the world exceed 8,000 meters in elevation. These mountains are called the " 14 Eight-Thousanders ," and reaching all of them is considered the pinnacle of mountaineering.
Afsaneh Hesamifard made history by becoming the first Iranian woman to reach all 14 summits by 2025.
- Everest (8,849 m) – May 2022. She became the third Iranian woman to reach the highest point on Earth. She achieved this feat along with Elham Ramezani .
- K2 (8,611 m) – July 2022 She made history as the first Iranian woman to climb K2, known as the "Mountain of Mountains." She reached the summit on the same day as Pakistani Samina Baig . This climb marked a milestone for female climbers, with five Muslim women reaching the summit.
- Manaslu (8,163 m) – 2021 Strengthened his experience in 8,000-meter mountains by reaching this challenging peak in Nepal.
- Annapurna (8,091 m) – April 2023 She became the first Iranian woman to climb Annapurna, a mountain known for its difficulty and fatality rate.
- Cho Oyu (8,188 m) – October 2025 When she reached the summit of Cho Oyu , located on the border of Tibet and Nepal, she became the first Iranian woman to conquer all 14 mountains above 8,000 meters.
On this latest ascent, he reached the summit alongside Taiwanese Chung-Han Lu and Kazakhstani Anar Burasheva . The team was supported by Nepal's legendary mountain guides, Tashi Sherpa and Pasang Tenji Sherpa .
With this remarkable achievement, Afsaneh Hesamifard achieved a title only a select few climbers in the world have ever achieved. Previously, only male climber Azim Gheichisaz from Iran had achieved this feat.
Hesamifard has his name written in gold among the elite climbers who have climbed the world's 14 highest mountains, now known as the " 14x8000 Club ".
Afsaneh Hesamifard is known not only for breaking through the peaks but also for breaking down barriers for women . Her expertise in mountain medicine allows her to provide training in health, safety, and endurance at high altitudes.
Her success encourages young women in Iran and around the world to pursue their dreams.
Hesamifard's success reflects the rise of female climbers globally . The increasing presence of women on deadly mountains like K2, Annapurna, and Everest demonstrates that the mountaineering world is breaking stereotypes.
Each summit reminds us of women's strength, willpower and love for nature.
There are 14 mountains (eight-thousanders) in the world that reach altitudes of 8,000 meters or more. Summiting all of these mountains is one of the most challenging projects in mountaineering, often referred to as the "Olympic championship." While Oh Eun-sun is the first woman to claim this feat, Reinhold Messner completed it in 1986, the summit of Kangchenjunga is not officially recognized due to its controversial nature. The first woman to officially summit it is Edurne Pasaban (2010).
While the number of women climbers who have completed this project has increased to date (as of October 2025), the full list is updated dynamically. I've listed them below in chronological order with important notes. A total of 20+ women have achieved the feat, but the most prominent are:
Order | Name | Country | Completion Year | Important Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Edurne Pasaban | Spain | 2010 | First female official. Completed with Shishapangma, finding Oh Eun-sun's claim controversial. 21st overall finisher. |
