It was learned that before coming to the scene, Volkan Sağlıca went to the Hayriye Mosque in the back street of Namazgah Park, asked the congregation about the headman Ruhhan Görgün, and threatened the imam by showing the gun in his hand.

The trial of Volkan Sağlıca, who was sued for 'attempted premeditated murder' and demanded a life sentence, continued at the Bursa 7th High Criminal Court. The defendant in custody Volkan Sağlıca, the complainant Ruhhan Görgün and their lawyers were present at the hearing. In his defense at the court, Sağlıca said, "I came from Ankara to Bursa after drinking for 12 hours. The headman slandered me by saying 'He sells drugs and traffics his wife'. I am not crazy, I have schizophrenia. There is a difference between the two. This has to be accepted. Sometimes it is not clear what I am doing. On the day of the incident, a voice in my head told me 'Shoot him' three times. So I shot him. I want my release."

Mukhtar Ruhhan Görgün, who survived the incident with injuries, said , "The defendant is lying. I do not accept his defense. I narrowly escaped death. I want him to be punished. I am filing a complaint." The court sentenced Volkan Sağlıca to 12 years in prison for the crime of "attempted premeditated murder" and 3 years and 9 months for the crime of "threatening with a weapon", for a total of 15 years and 9 months, and ruled that his detention would continue.
