Alexey Safonov, a meteorologist and weather observer for the Meteoweb project, told the MK internet portal when warm weather and an Indian summer can be expected in Moscow and the surrounding region.
The weather forecaster said: "In terms of the weather patterns, Indian summer used to arrive in September. After the end of August wasn't so warm: typical weather with light rain, but it still felt warm. Then temperatures would reach somewhere between 20 and 22°C, sometimes between 18 and 20°C, and a serene autumn would arrive. That's what we called Indian summer."
Alexey Safonov said: "Now look what's happening. At least the end of August was dry. The entire first half of September, even more, wasn't exactly dry; it was more like summer. That is, there was little precipitation, convential phenomena, just like in summer: not as protracted as we're all accustomed to. So, in principle, we could say that we've had a meteorological and Indian summer combined this year. But that's based on preliminary data."
The meteorologist suggested: "It's entirely possible that the temperature in October will be +16 to +18. This has actually happened over the past five years. So there's a chance that it won't be completely cold and winter will arrive soon. In reality, this is a transitional period, when you have temperatures around +10 to +13 during the day and around +3 to +5 at night. This period can last quite a long time. For example, in 2006, this period lasted literally until December 31st, until it dropped to -5 on January 1st and snow fell. This also happens. So we'll see how things play out this year."
