Disney announces construction of themed resort in Abu Dhabi

Disney announced on Wednesday (7) that it will build a themed resort in Abu Dhabi , in the United Arab Emirates. The company's new property will be located on Yas Island , which is already home to world-renowned theme parks such as Ferrari World, SeaWorld and Warner Bros. World.

This will be Disney’s seventh resort in the world. “Our Abu Dhabi property will be the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio. Our park’s location is incredibly unique – anchored by a beautiful waterfront – which will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways,” Josh D’Amaro , CEO of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products , said in a statement.

According to Disney, in addition to the theme park, the new resort will have themed accommodations, gastronomic experiences and shopping spaces.

The new development will be entirely developed, built and operated by Miral, an Abu Dhabi-based company focused on creating leisure and entertainment destinations and managing real estate assets. However, Imagineers, the creative and technical team from The Walt Disney Company, will lead the creative design and operational oversight of the site.

“As our seventh destination, it will rise to the occasion in spectacular fashion, combining contemporary architecture with cutting-edge technology to offer guests deeply immersive entertainment experiences in unique and modern ways,” said Robert A. Iger , CEO of The Walt Disney Company.

The company's president added that Disneyland Abu Dhabi will be authentically Disney, but that it will also be distinguished by being Emirati, that is, native to the United Arab Emirates.

In addition to its Florida and California resorts, Disney now has properties in the Paris, France , Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo areas. The parks and experiences division is also behind Disney Cruise Line, which operates cruises around the world .

Billion-dollar investments

Last year, Josh D'Amaro announced that the company's parks, resorts and cruises division is experiencing a "period of unprecedented growth and expansion."

Disney has been implementing a cycle of projects valued at US$60 billion , which includes expansions in the parks, new shows, parades, restaurants and the increase to 13 ships in the cruise line by 2031 .

This includes, for example, the largest expansion in the history of Magic Kingdom Park , the most visited theme park in the world. The project includes the construction of a new villain-themed area, as well as an area inspired by the “Cars” franchise in a part of Frontierland. Check out more details in this article .
