FNAM demands justice and recognition for civilian doctors in the National Defense.

FNAM demands justice and recognition for civilian doctors in the National Defense.

The National Federation of Doctors (FNAM) met on November 4th with the Deputy Secretary of State for National Defence, Álvaro Castelo Branco, to discuss the situation of civilian doctors working at the Ministry of National Defence (MDN). Issues related to career transition and the salary effects resulting from acquiring the Consultant degree were on the agenda.

In a statement, FNAM emphasizes that, during the meeting, it confronted the Ministry of National Defence with the non-compliance with the law that regulates the medical career, denouncing that it has been "systematically disregarded" at the Armed Forces Hospital (HFAR), both in the Lisbon and Porto units.

"There are civilian doctors with the degree of Consultant who should be classified as Senior Assistant, but who continue to receive Assistant salaries," denounced the federation, considering it "a blatant injustice and a violation of the right to career progression."

FNAM also stressed the urgent need to review the Collective Bargaining Agreement applicable to these professionals.

According to the federation, the Secretary of State expressed willingness to assess the situation and provide a response to FNAM, acknowledging the importance of the issue.

In a context where the government led by Luís Montenegro is preparing cuts to the National Health Service (SNS), but announcing significant increases in investment in Defense – with the goal of reaching 2% of GDP in military spending and an increase of one billion euros in the sector – FNAM considers it “essential that civilian doctors serving the country in military structures see their work valued and respected”.

“Without career progression and without fair conditions, these doctors end up leaving the HFAR,” warns the federation, demanding “the appreciation of the medical career and fair wages for doctors, including those who work under the supervision of the Ministry of National Defence.”
