The holiday country is making changes. We will pay up to 20 euros per person

Greece is becoming even more expensive for tourists. From July 1, 2025, passengers on cruise ships and boats disembarking on the islands of Mykonos and Santorini will have to pay an additional 20 euros per person. This is where, during the peak holiday season, the number of holidaymakers arriving significantly exceeds the number of residents themselves. Tourists arriving on Crete, Rhodes or Corfu will also pay - but there the tax will be much lower, at just 5 euros.
New fee in GreeceGreece is planning to introduce a new passenger fee from July 1. The tax will apply to major ports and the most famous tourist islands, such as Corfu, Crete (Heraklion), Rhodes, Chania, Patmos, Santorini and Mykonos. "This decisive move aims to better manage the growing number of tourists arriving on cruise ships, combat overcrowding and raise funds for the modernization of tourist infrastructure," we read in an article by Travel and Tour World. The revenue from the fee is to be used, among other things, to improve the quality of service and, consequently, a better experience for visitors.
High hotel chargesInitially, the fee was to be introduced on June 1, but the deadline was eventually postponed by a month. Fees will be collected according to the established price list until the end of the high holiday season, i.e. until September 30. Then their amount will be reduced - from 20 euros to 12 euros and from 5 euros to 3 euros, respectively. In winter, the tax will be even lower and will amount to 4 euros in the case of Santorini and Mykonos and 1 euro in the other ports.
This is not all that tourists need to be prepared for. Greece has one of the highest taxes on accommodation. Depending on the standard of the hotel, this fee can be up to 15 euros per room per night.
