Who should NOT eat oatmeal?

Who should NOT eat oatmeal?

Oats have a privileged place on the list of the most popular cereals, as their nutritional properties are widely known. Despite this, there are some people who should avoid eating them for the sake of their health.

Who should not eat oats?

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)

When consuming oats, people with this syndrome, characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and constipation, may find their symptoms worse, as it can be difficult for some to digest.

The fructans and galactans found in oats are types of fermentable carbohydrates that can trigger these symptoms in people with this condition.

Celiac disease

This is a condition in which gluten consumption triggers an immune reaction that damages the small intestine. Although oats are gluten-free, the fact that they are often harvested and/or processed alongside gluten-containing grains, such as wheat, barley, and rye, leads to cross-contamination.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS)

This sensitivity causes symptoms similar to those of celiac disease, but without damaging the small intestine. Thus, people with this condition may experience abdominal pain, bloating, and fatigue after eating gluten.

The best option for consuming this cereal is to opt for certified gluten-free oats.

Oat allergy

Although rare, some people may experience an oat allergy and should avoid eating it. Symptoms of this condition include skin rashes, itching, swelling, breathing difficulties, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction.
