The Sandman 2: The Settings That Bring Morpheus' Universe to Life

After a few years of waiting, due to a production extension caused by the SAG-AFTRA strikes, the second highly anticipated season of The Sandman lands on Netflix. This second cycle will be released in two parts: the first on July 3 and the second on July 24, 2025. Inspired by the iconic graphic novel of the same name, The Sandman is a fantasy TV series whose story revolves around Morpheus (the incarnation of dreams), who after being imprisoned for decades, manages to free himself and embarks on a journey to rebuild his kingdom and restore the lost balance. To describe this particular context, however, the right locations are essential, which are crucial to giving a totally characteristic breath to the product.
What is season 2 about? After an intense and inevitable confrontation with his family, Dream of the Endless finds himself forced to make increasingly difficult choices in a desperate attempt to save himself, his kingdom, and the Waking world from the tragic consequences of his past actions. To make amends, he must confront his past and confront ancient allies and enemies: gods, monstrous creatures, and mere mortals. But the path to redemption is winding and unpredictable, and the price of forgiveness may be higher than Dream is willing to pay. Based on the award-winning DC comic book series , The Sandman Season 2 will bring the final, epic chapter of Dream's story to its touching conclusion.
Where was it filmed? After a brilliant first season, greeted with almost unanimous enthusiasm, we are now ready to enjoy the continuation of this magical adventure. But where was the second season filmed? The locations of this new journey are mostly in the United Kingdom , with a focus on iconic natural areas (Dorset, Brighton, Surrey, Kent), but also urban sites (Woking, Shepperton) and film studios. Each location has been carefully chosen to recreate the dreamlike and mythological atmosphere of Gaiman's saga.
Durdle Door, Dorset (England) and surroundingsIn the summer of 2023, the spectacular Durdle Door beach became the protagonist of a scene with Tom Sturridge . The set then moved to the nearby Parkstone Cemetery in Poole, within its specific context and, of course, with full respect for the gravestones and the deceased who inhabit the cemetery. The place could be connected to characters linked to the Realm of the Dead (such as Death or Lucienne) or to dream events from the saga The Season of Mists . Durdle Door is also one of the most photographed and iconic monuments in Dorset , a natural limestone arch that rests on the sea and is often used to evoke otherworldly places.
Woking, Surrey (England)We move on to the town of Woking , a sober place with modern structures that can be adapted to various urban environments. Some central scenes were filmed here, more specifically: Debenhams (Victoria Place) could represent an urban or commercial space in the real world, Dukes Court used as a police station or institution and Brookwood Cemetery (also one of the largest cemeteries in England) perfect setting for several sequences of the series but often used in other gothic and fantasy films.
Shepperton Studios, London (England) and surrounding areasPrincipal photography began at Shepperton Studios (the home of the first season) between June 2023 and August 2024. This location was used as a headquarters mainly for complex interior sequences, such as Morpheus' palace or Lucienne's Library.
Frensham Little Pond and Bourne Woods, Surrey (England)In June 2024, filming was done at Frensham Little Pond , a small reservoir built in the 13th century to provide water to nearby monasteries. With Stephen Fry playing Gilbert as the main character, the filming at this location focused on fairy creatures and dark, mystical woodland atmospheres. In the same month, sequences from A Midsummer Night's Dream were filmed in the Bourne Woods, including some nocturnal scenes in the woods or battles and magical encounters. This location has often been used in other famous fantasy products such as Harry Potter, Thor: The Dark World and The Witcher.
Royal Pavilion, Brighton (England)In February 2024, evocative sequences were filmed at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton, which required snowy settings. The optimal result was obtained with artificial snow, in order to ensure very decorative and symbolic settings. The Indo-Saracenic architecture of the Royal Pavilion makes it perfect for the Realm of Dreams or divine settings (such as the Underworld or Heaven).
Scotney Castle, Kent (England)A swordfight scene, corresponding to moments from The Season of Mists , took place at Scotney Castle (Lamberhurst, Kent). The castle is a medieval structure with a moat and picturesque gardens. It could represent one of the Courts of Hell or the realm of one of the Endless. Scotney Castle is a Victorian country house set in one of the most romantic gardens in England, surrounded by a beautiful wooded estate, which includes extensive ruins and a hop plantation.
