They lean on each other to move forward, descending the stairs step by step, limping. No need to ask them if they participated in one of the races in the Trail Alsace Grand Est by UTMB, organized this weekend in Obernai: their gait and the tired features of their faces say it all. Romain and Matthieu, two brothers from Orléans and Lyon, ran the Païens ultra-trail (116 km) together, which they completed Friday evening around midnight.
Twelve hours later, they remain physically scarred by the 17-hour race. While they managed to finish without major injury, their bodies suffered. "I started to struggle after 80 kilometers," explains Matthieu. "At one point, the body says stop, but the brain takes over." His brother spent an hour and a half with the podiatrists at the finish line. "I had blisters and blue nails, with holes," says Romain, pleasantly surprised to "still find people available to massage..."
