Eating apples is good for your memory

To reach this conclusion, the scientists worked on stem cells from the brains of adult mice. These cells, grown in the laboratory, were found to be protected from cell death when quercetin or dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA), phytonutrients commonly found in apples, were added to the cultures.
Further tests, also conducted on rodents, showed that in distinct structures of the adult brain associated with learning and memory, stem cells multiplied and generated more neurons when the mice received high doses of these two nutrients.
Apples, sport, same effectsThe effects of apples on neurogenesis were comparable to those observed after physical exercise, which is well known to have effects on neurogenesis. “Our study suggests that natural fruit compounds, such as quercetin, DHBA, and potentially others, may act synergistically to promote neurogenesis and brain function when administered at high concentrations,” the authors report.
