An ambitious plan estimated at €104 million is to modernize aging buildings and obsolete technical systems, which are ill-suited to the tourist flow of 1.8 million visitors each year. The museum is seeking state aid to finance its maintenance.

Every year, nearly 1.8 million visitors flock to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam to admire more than 200 paintings and around 500 of the painter's drawings, including the famous "Sunflowers," "Almond Blossom," and "The Potato Eaters." Since its opening in 1973, no fewer than 57 million visitors (with a peak of 2.6 million in 2017) have passed through the doors of this internationally renowned cultural institution. Aging and state-owned, the buildings are no longer suitable for welcoming all these visitors, some of whom have reduced mobility. Hence the need, according to its director, Emilie Gordenker, for " urgent " repairs to guarantee public safety, a finding validated by an independent committee, according to the museum.
