118 grams of 18-carat gold, presented in a crystal case. The Palme d'Or is awarded each year to the best film in the official selection of the Cannes Film Festival.
Why a Palme d'Or? Because the palm leaf is the symbol of the city of Cannes. When the festival was founded in 1946, winners didn't receive a Palme d'Or, but rather the work of an artist.
Then, in 1954, a competition was held among the city's best jewelers to design the trophy. Designer Lucienne Lazon's design was chosen: a palm leaf with a heart-shaped stem placed on a terracotta base.
The Palme d'Or was modernized by jeweler Chopard in 1997. Chopard also manufactures it in workshops near Geneva. Seven artisans work for 40 hours to craft the trophy!
They make a wax model to create a mold into which gold is injected. The final step is to polish the Palme d'Or to make it shine. The jeweler makes two Palmes d'Or each year, in case of a tie... or an accident!
