What diseases can you get during a flood?

Experts from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say exposure to floodwater can cause the following illnesses:

  • Wound infections
  • Rash
  • Gastrointestinal diseases
  • Tetanus
  • Leptospirosis (not common)
  • Melioidosis (along the Gulf Coast)

Specifically in the case of injuries, the CDC states that these are caused by the fact that floodwaters can carry sharp objects, which could cause skin injuries and lead to infection. In these cases, First aid can help heal minor wounds and prevent infections.

The main form of protection is to stay out of the water. However, in case of coming into contact with this, the following is recommended:

  • Immediately wash the exposed area with soap and clean water. If soap and water are not available, the use of wet wipes or alcohol-based disinfectants is recommended.
  • Treat wounds medically.
  • Wash clothing that has been in contact with contaminated water with hot water and detergent .
  • If contact with flood water cannot be avoided, it is recommended to wear rain boots and gloves , as well as eye protection.
