Faced with rising cases, dengue prevention strategy is being strengthened

With 787 cases as of June 12, Jalisco ranks first nationwide in dengue fever cases, so this morning the strengthening of the disease prevention strategy was announced, with an investment of 310 million pesos by 2025.

Isabel Higuera Torres, head of vectors and zoonoses at the OPD Jalisco Health Services , explained that the prevention strategy focuses on the integrated management of the transmitting mosquito , epidemiological surveillance, and communication about the risks of dengue to the population .

This year, there are 1,064 brigade members . In addition , 77 more vehicles were added for transportation and fogging operations .

“We identify breeding sites, number one, and we eliminate and control them . This significantly reduces the risk of dengue , and eliminating and controlling breeding sites is the most effective and cost-effective way to keep dengue-transmitting mosquitoes out of our homes,” he said.

So far this year , personnel from the state Health Secretariat have visited 768,989 homes . Of these, 415,348 have allowed the entry of fumigation teams . Meanwhile, Higuera Torres commented, work is being done with the state's municipalities to eliminate massive breeding sites . To date, 1,094 of these actions have been carried out.

The doctor also added that awareness campaigns have been intensified in schools, neighborhoods, cemeteries, and public places to strengthen preventive measures among the population.

"What we're finding are these containers, forgotten or stored on roofs without any protection, as they are very common breeding grounds," he commented.

As part of these actions, the implementation of guppy fish is also contemplated as an additional measure to control the transmitting mosquito .

For his part, Héctor Raúl Pérez Gómez, state health secretary, explained that probable cases of dengue are lower in each epidemiological week this year compared to 2024. However, so far in 2025, more cases have been recorded than in the same period last year: 405 people compared to 179.

Of the 787 confirmed cases, nearly half (382) correspond to dengue with warning signs and severe dengue . The secretary explained that the high incidence in these types of cases is due to the fact that people could have been infected with another serotype or, alternatively, become ill with dengue again . Furthermore, the transmitting mosquito may have adapted to different climatic conditions , such as cold.

Sixty-nine percent of the cases in Jalisco are in the health regions of Autlán, Puerto Vallarta, Ameca, and Zapopan. Meanwhile, the most affected municipalities are Puerto Vallarta, Zapopan, Casimiro Castillo, and Cocula.

"Jalisco is working intensively with its brigades and its various public health units in its 13 health regions and its general public health department. We are constantly alert to any outbreak, not only of dengue, but of any infectious disease," he noted.

All brigade members who visit homes can be identified by the Ministry of Health's institutional logos, as well as a QR code on the back of their badges.
