Musk-backed Gina Carano settles lawsuit against Disney following her dismissal from 'The Mandalorian'
Disney has reached an agreement with actress Gina Carano to settle the lawsuit filed following her dismissal from the Star Wars series "The Mandalorian." This was confirmed by a spokesperson for Lucasfilm, a Disney subsidiary, on Thursday.
Carano was removed from the production in 2021 after the company called social media posts that it alleged "denigrated people based on their cultural and religious identities" " repugnant and unacceptable," according to Reuters.
In 2024, the actress filed a lawsuit alleging wrongful termination and sexual discrimination , with financial backing from entrepreneur Elon Musk . Carano maintained that she was fired for expressing conservative views, while, according to her version, male actors who made similar comments were not disciplined.
I have come to an agreement with Disney/Lucasfilm @disney @Lucasfilm which I believe is the best outcome for all parties involved. I hope this brings some healing to the force. I want to extend my deepest most heartfelt gratitude to Elon Musk, @elonmusk a man I've never met,… https://t.co/qiAX7W1vgf

In their statement, a Lucasfilm spokesperson stated that Carano "was always highly respected by her directors, co-stars, and crew," highlighting her efforts to "perfect her craft" and her "kind and respectful" demeanor. They added that, with the litigation now closed, "we look forward to finding opportunities to work with Ms. Carano again in the near future." The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
On Musk's social media platform X, Carano hailed the resolution as "the best outcome for all parties," saying she felt "honored and grateful to God" for the outcome and expressing gratitude to Musk for "supporting her case" without asking for "anything in return."
Carano played the warrior Cara Dune in 'The Mandalorian', one of Disney+'s biggest hits since its premiere in 2019. Her dismissal came after several controversial posts on social media, including one on Instagram in which, according to Variety, she wrote: "Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers, but by their neighbors... even by children."
She was also criticized for mocking the use of masks during the Covid-19 pandemic and spreading false claims about voter fraud in the 2020 US election.
This Thursday, Carano declared she was "excited" to move on: "My dreams remain in the arts, which is where I hope you'll join me. Yes, I'm smiling."
