Maintaining color and shape: How to wash jeans

Jeans are a timeless classic, but washing them incorrectly can destroy their characteristics. With these tips, they will stay in top shape.
Around 150 years after Levi Strauss (1829-1902) invented jeans and revolutionized fashion, they are still one of the most popular items of clothing. But as timeless and robust as the fabric is, incorrect care can rob it of its charm quicker than you would like. Washed-out colors, baggy fits and unsightly creases - all of this happens when jeans are washed incorrectly. But there are simple tricks to keep your favorite pants in top shape for a long time.
Do not wash too oftenJeans can be found in almost every closet, and many people wear them every day. However, they should not be put in the washing machine too often. Experts recommend washing the trousers every four to six weeks - of course, this only applies if they are not too dirty. Some even believe that jeans should not be washed at all. However, if jeans are put in the washing machine too often, they will quickly fade. In addition, the fibres will come loose and the fabric will shrink over time.
Wash jeans gentlyGenerally, it is advisable to use a gentle wash cycle at low temperatures. If the washing machine is set to 60 degrees Celsius or higher, the color of the jeans will be affected. The revolutions per minute should also not exceed 1,200 to protect the fabric. Simple color and delicate detergents are suitable for the wash cycle. However, you should avoid using heavy-duty detergents and fabric softeners when washing denim.
Sustainable CareA gentler option than the spin cycle is to let the jeans dry in the air. To prevent fading, the jeans should not be exposed to strong sunlight. A dryer can also cause damage. Experts also recommend not ironing the denim. If there are wrinkles, they usually disappear by simply shaking them out and at the latest by wearing the pants. To prevent unpleasant odors despite infrequent cleaning, the jeans should be aired out regularly in the fresh air.

There is a widespread rumor that freezing jeans instead of washing them will kill bacteria. Jeans manufacturer Levi's advises against this. Instead, fill the bathtub with cold water and add a mild detergent, then soak the jeans in it for about 30 minutes. Then rinse thoroughly with cold water. Avoid wringing the item of clothing.
