Felipe and Letizia of Spain: Portrait visit together with photographer Annie Leibovitz

A year ago, the Spanish royal couple posed for Annie Leibovitz. The trio met again on Wednesday in front of the resulting portraits.
King Felipe VI (57) and Queen Letizia (52) have taken another look at the glamorous portraits she made together with photographer Annie Leibovitz (75). These were unveiled in November and quickly sparked a debate. Critics complained about the high cost and the timing of the publication shortly after the destructive floods in Valencia.
Trio chats and poses in front of the portraitsA year after posing for Annie Leibovitz, the royal couple met again with the famous photographer, who has already photographed many celebrities, on February 26. During a visit to the art exhibition "The Tyranny of Kronos" at the Bank of Spain in Madrid, the trio posed in front of portraits by press photographers.
The satisfaction of the king and queen with the result and their good relationship with Annie Leibovitz were clearly evident at the meeting, according to the Spanish "Vanity Fair" . Queen Letizia in particular, who shone in a red suit by Carolina Herrera, had a lot to talk about with Leibovitz.
As the newspaper "Hola" reported, the Bank of Spain paid 137,000 euros for the two historical-style pictures. The photo shoot took place in February 2024 in the Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace in Madrid. The resulting photos look like paintings of monarchs from previous centuries. Felipe VI posed in his Captain General's uniform of the Spanish Army and is leaning against a table in the photo. His wife is wearing a black, off-the-shoulder robe made of vintage tulle by Cristóbal Balenciaga and a voluminous fuchsia cape.

The work is conceived as a diptych. Although they are two separate portraits, they belong together. The images are connected by a chair that is cut off on Felipe's side and continues on Letizia's.
Royal couple has a preference for Leibovitz photosIt was commissioned by the Bank of Spain for its private collection. But it is said that the choice of Annie Leibovitz also took into account the preferences of the royal couple. Felipe and Letizia are said to have a great appreciation for the American artist's work. They met the American artist in 2013 when they presented her with the Prince of Asturias Award in the Communication and Humanities category in Oviedo.
